October 18th is Celebrate Farm to Preschool Day; Tell us what you'll be doing to celebrate!

In 2010, Congress approved a resolution to officially designate October as National Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate the connections that are happening all over the country between children and local food. Each day of the month will feature a different theme, and on October 18th, we're celebrating farm to preschool! Farm to preschool includes the full spectrum of child care delivery: preschools, Head Start, center-based, programs in K-12 school districts, and family home care facilities.

If your preschool, farm, or organization is hosting a Farm to School Month event or activity, be sure to share your story by filling out a "Farm to School Counts" survey at And, don't forget to take lots of photos! Farm to School Counts participants will be entered to win a variety of prizes, including curriculum resources and registration to the 7th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference in Austin, Texas in April, 2014 (more information on the conference, below). Submit fun photos from your day and make sure your activity is counted here.

Regional Farm to Preschool Conferences

In the Northeast: Join the Farm-Based Education Network and many other farm to school partners for a Northeast Farm to Preschool Forum on October 5th in Dublin, New Hampshire. This full day forum will provide tools for engaging children on a farm or in a garden, as well as tips for bringing agriculture into the classroom and/or meal and snack programs. Share activities, explore safety and risk, try kid-friendly recipes, and discuss the exciting intersection where seed to table meets preschool! Afternoon field trips to nearby farms are included in the cost of registration. Click here for more information.

In the Southeast: ASAP's Farm to School Conference will be on November 2nd in Asheville, North Carolina, on the UNC Asheville Campus. This year's conference will include a specialized track for early care, titled "Preschool: Connecting the youngest students with local food and farms." Visit the Growing Minds website for the day's schedule, more information about the conference, and to register.

In Georgia: A two-day, statewide Farm to Preschool Summit took place September 13th-14th. The Summit was the first of its kind, and was a resounding success! Read more about the day here.
